I am an illegal immigrant. I came to this country from Poland. I graduated from the University of Warsaw with master's in chemistry.
I came to the US after I graduated as a tourist in 2000. I had a dream to become a dentist so I decided I will learn English first. I went to college to do so and I applied for a student visa. After I finished ESL courses I decided I will go to study biology and pre-med. I did so and I graduated from Brooklyn College, CUNY but unfortunately I didn't received my student visa, I still don't know why. I took a DAT exam, dental school, but even though I did score high I wasn't able to apply to any school because of luck of finances.
Years passed by since than and I wasn't able to use my education. Some people say, so why didn't you leave, and I should probably do that. But this country became my home. I did work over the years and pay taxes. I reach the point though that I want to be legal to be able to stay here and live like a human being. I am a hard working person, with high education that can bring to society more while having legal status. I am not asking to become a citizen but have a working visa, so I will be able to have a job, home and be able to travel.
This is the country I want to live but only as a human being, I am tired of the every day struggle. I want to also mention that I don't receive and never did any financial help from the government, but paired taxes and do many hours of volunteer work in the community. Some people think that people that are here illegal, want to stay that way. It is very false. Most of them, including myself, want a normal life. Most of us work really hard, being abused because of the status. We are underpaid because of the status. I know I can be a better citizen of the community being legal than illegal.
Thank you for standing up for the immigration reform.
